Who Google cites in the AI Overview — and whether you even have one

Google’s AI Overview lifts the answer straight into the SERP and cites a handful of sources — but it doesn’t appear everywhere, and it usually cites something other than brands. Instead of guessing, there’s a free tool: the Google AI Overview checker.

What the checker shows

Paste a query (and optionally your domain) and the checker reads the live SERP to answer three things: whether this query triggers an AI Overview, which exact domains and pages Google cites inside it, and whether your domain made it in. Below that, the organic top-10 for context. One request, and the result is a snapshot of the real SERP — not a guess.

Lesson 1: AI Overviews aren’t everywhere

The first thing live runs reveal is that AI Overview presence is unpredictable across queries. “What is generative engine optimization” had no AI Overview at check time, while “best project management software” and “how to improve core web vitals” did. The takeaway is simple: before optimizing for the AI Overview, confirm it exists for your queries — otherwise you’re fighting for a surface that isn’t there.

Lesson 2: it cites Reddit and YouTube, not you

When an AI Overview is present, the citation mix is sobering. For “best project management software” Google cited reddit.com, icagile.com, wrike.com and youtube.com; for “how to improve core web vitals” — web.dev, developers.google.com, youtube.com and ahrefs.com. Brands sit next to forums, videos and references. That list is your target map: to enter the answer, you either become one of those sources or earn a mention inside them.

What to do with the result

The list of cited domains is a ready-made digital-PR plan: be present where Google takes its answer. If you’re absent from an AI Overview your competitors are in, you now see the exact target. The full picture across your whole query set — Perplexity, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google AIO at once, with share of voice — comes from the paid AI-Visibility Report.

FAQ

Does Google show an AI Overview for every query?

No. AI Overviews appear selectively — more on informational and how-to queries, less on commercial or narrow ones. For example, "what is generative engine optimization" had no AI Overview at check time, while "best project management software" did. So step one is to check presence, not guess.

Who does Google cite in the AI Overview?

Often not brands but "trust sources" — Reddit, YouTube, industry and reference sites. For "best project management software" the citations included reddit.com, wrike.com and youtube.com; for "how to improve core web vitals" — web.dev, developers.google.com and youtube.com. Your job is to get into that list.

How do I check the AI Overview for free?

Paste a keyword (and optionally your domain) into our checker at /tools/ai-overview-checker/ — it reads the live SERP and shows whether an AI Overview exists, which domains it cites, and whether you made it in.
