Who AI Overview actually cites

We track 297 queries in the AI-SEO niche. On 21 August 2026 we re-checked every one of them and recorded what Google's AI Overview attributed. 234 queries returned an AI Overview. 69% of the citations went to domains nobody would call a household name — and none of them went to us.

The numbers

  • 234 of 297 queries (79%) returned an AI Overview.
  • 252 citations across 87 answers where sources resolved — 2.9 sources per answer on average.
  • 166 distinct domains were cited. The most-cited single domain accounts for 14 citations (6%).
  • 31% of citations went to the names you would predict (Semrush, Ahrefs, HubSpot, Reddit, YouTube, Wikipedia). The other 69% went elsewhere.
  • 0 citations pointed at seomatrix.ai. We publish this number because a study that only reports other people's gaps is marketing, not measurement.

Product pages get cited more than guides

The advice everyone repeats is “publish a comprehensive guide”. In this sample the guide is the second most-cited format, and it is not close:

  • 52% — Product / landing pages (130 of 252)
  • 23% — Guides and blog posts (57 of 252)
  • 16% — Listicles (“best … tools”) (41 of 252)
  • 6% — YouTube videos (14 of 252)
  • 4% — Reddit threads (10 of 252)

Read literally: an AI answer about “the best X tool” quotes the page that plainly states what X does and what it costs, more often than the 3 000-word essay about the category. If you have one page describing your product and one guide about the space, the product page is the one worth making quotable first.

The long tail matters more than the head: 166 domains split 252 citations, so the median cited domain appears exactly once. Being cited here is not a prize reserved for the biggest site in the room.

What this changes about GEO work

Ranking and being cited are separate games. Several domains in the table do not hold a top-100 classic position for the query that cites them. If your position report says “nowhere” and you stop there, you are not measuring the surface that is actually answering your buyers.

Specific beats comprehensive. An answer built from 2.9 sources needs each source to supply one crisp, attributable fact — a number, a definition, a limit. Pages that bury the fact under narrative get read and not quoted.

Check the AI Overview before you rewrite anything. Run your own query through the AI Overview checker and see whether the block exists and who is in it. If you want it tracked over time rather than checked once, that is what the position tracker and AI-visibility monitoring do.

Method, and what it does not prove

297 keywords tracked for seomatrix.ai in Google, United States, English, re-checked on 21 August 2026 through a SERP API. For each query we recorded AI Overview presence and the attributed URLs. Sources resolved for 87 of 234 overviews; the remainder returned the block without a usable source list, and we left them out of the citation counts rather than guessing.

Limits worth stating plainly: one niche, one country, one language, one day. AI Overviews are personalised and volatile — the same query can return a different source set an hour later. Treat the percentages as the shape of the surface, not as constants. The 0 in our own row is a snapshot too: we published this study partly to change it, and the next measurement will say whether it worked.

Questions

Does every query get an AI Overview?

No. In this sample 234 of 297 queries (79%) returned an AI Overview on Google US. The rest showed classic results only. Coverage varies by niche and changes month to month, which is why the measurement carries a date.

Do you need to rank in the top 10 to be cited?

Not in this sample. Citations regularly pointed at pages outside the first page of classic results, and several cited domains do not rank in the top 100 for the same query. AI Overview picks passages that answer the question, then attributes them — position helps but is not the gate.

What kind of page gets cited most?

Product and landing pages: 130 of 252 citations (52%). Guides came second at 23%. That contradicts the common advice to publish long guides for AI visibility — in this niche, the page that plainly describes what a tool does gets cited more often than the essay about the category.

How many sources does one AI Overview use?

2.9 on average here, across 166 distinct domains in 87 sampled answers. A single answer rarely leans on one source, which is why "being the best page" matters less than being one of the few pages that states the specific fact the answer needs.

How was this measured?

297 keywords tracked for seomatrix.ai in Google (US, English) were re-checked on 21 August 2026 through the DataForSEO SERP API. For every query we recorded whether an AI Overview was present and which URLs it attributed. Sources were captured for 87 of the 234 AI Overviews — the rest returned the block without a resolvable source list.
